UK Expresses Openness to Customs Arrangement Proposals with EU

London (Eurotoday) – The UK government, which had refused a suggestion of a customs arrangement with the European Union, stated it is ready to “consider proposals,” cautiously unlocking the door to post-Brexit trade rapprochement.

European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič expressed earlier this week on the BBC that the EU was willing to “consider” incorporating the UK into this deal with certain Member States, Mediterranean nations and Balkan countries. Britain has “no plans to join” such an arrangement, stated Nick Thomas-Symonds, Minister for Post-Brexit Relations with the European Union.

Talking on Sky News on January 26, 2025, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves said,

It was very interesting to see Maroš Šefčovič suggest this week that Britain could be welcome in this customs framework.

We are absolutely willing to look at these various proposals because we know the deal secured by the previous government does not work well enough,

she said.

How has Rachel Reeves approached the UK-EU trade relationship?

Reeves wants a new approach, an approach that is more collaborative and pragmatic going forward.
