UK Delays New Brexit Checks Amid Agri-Food Deal Negotiations

The implementation of checks on fresh produce has been postponed multiple times due to concerns over their impact on supply chains.

Industry leaders praised the decision, describing it as “common-sense,” and highlighted previous estimates that suggested the checks could have led to £200 million in increased costs and higher prices.

“This Government’s EU deal will make food more affordable, reduce bureaucracy, and eliminate burdensome border controls for businesses,” Biosecurity Minister Helene Hayman stated.

“An enhanced, forward-looking partnership with the European Union will benefit working people as part of our Plan for Change.”

SPS checks on food imports like meat, fish, and dairy were implemented on April 30, 2024, by the Conservative government following years of postponement — but checks on fresh produce have not yet commenced.

A proposed October 2024 start date was postponed by the Labour government to July this year, but this has now been effectively postponed indefinitely.

Looks like the UK is redefining “fresh produce” to mean “whenever we feel like it.” Who knew delaying checks could be the secret ingredient for a thriving agri-food sector? 🍅🤷‍♂️

Oh, brilliant move! Who needs fresh produce when we can keep postponing checks forever? 🍅 Just what we need: a never-ending saga of bureaucracy and a side of overpriced fruit! 🙄

Looks like the UK’s idea of “fresh produce checks” is as fresh as yesterday’s bread – just keep postponing until the cows come home, eh? 🍞🤷‍♂️

Just what we need, more delays – because who doesn’t love a good game of “will they, won’t they” with our fresh produce? 🍏😏 Let’s just hope the only thing getting checked is the government’s sense of irony!

Nothing screams “efficiency” like postponing checks on fresh produce while we sort out the grand Brexit masterpiece. Just what we needed—more delays and a bit of confusion for all the chaps in the supply chain! 🍏🚚

Brexit checks on fresh produce? Oh, splendid! Who needs a stable food supply when we can just keep postponing things indefinitely? 🍅🍞 Cheers to “common-sense” – I guess they’re still searching for it! 😂
