Harpsund – Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is hosting a Nordic-Baltic summit on Wednesday and Thursday, which will also see participation from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The leaders of these nations are reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine and pledging to enhance their support efforts.
“If Ukraine loses, we all lose,” warns Donald Tusk, whose country is set to assume the EU presidency in the new year.
This development coincides with the anticipated inauguration of US President Donald Trump across the Atlantic.
Many European NATO allies are increasingly worried that under Trump’s leadership, the US may scale back its assistance to Ukraine, a move that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fears could result in a Ukrainian defeat.
Can Poland and the EU step up to fill the gap if US support is withdrawn?
“We must be realistic about the challenges we will face in the coming weeks and months. This means that Europe and NATO must be prepared to compensate for any reduction in American assistance if the situation unfolds as it seems it might,” Tusk states.
“This is not just about Ukraine; it’s about our collective security,” he adds.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also stresses the need for increased European support.
“If we want a free Europe, we must provide Ukraine with the resources it requires on the battlefield. We must do so without imposing unnecessary limitations or restrictions,” she asserts.
