Trump’s Ukraine-Russia Envoy Won’t Attend Saudi Peace Talks
Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine-Russia negotiations, retired General Keith Kellogg, will not be attending upcoming peace talks in Saudi Arabia, according to officials.
Additionally, there are no plans for representatives from other major European powers to participate in the discussions. This decision may frustrate NATO allies, who have publicly urged Trump to ensure their involvement in negotiations.
The meeting could serve as a pivotal moment in Trump’s efforts to broker a peace process and would mark the first significant gathering of Russian and Ukrainian representatives since the war began in 2022.
Republican lawmaker Mike McCaul of Texas confirmed that Representatives Mike Waltz and Jeffrey Witkoff will join Senator Marco Rubio in Saudi Arabia to initiate discussions between the two warring nations. He made the announcement during an interview at the POLITICO Pub on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Two U.S. officials, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, verified the plans but did not disclose additional details, including the identities of the Russian and Ukrainian negotiators involved. Neither the Ukrainian government nor the U.S. State Department responded to a request for comment.
Trump also announced on Wednesday that he anticipates a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia. “We ultimately expect to meet,” Trump told reporters. “We’ll meet in Saudi Arabia and see if we can get something done.”
