Geneva (Switzerland) – On Thursday, negotiators from 185 nations engaged in intense discussions in an effort to bridge significant differences and create the first global treaty to address plastic pollution.
In a message on X, French President Emmanuel Macron urged the adoption of a text that reflects the urgency of the current environmental and health crisis.
However, the likelihood of reaching a consensus appears low due to the substantial divisions between the opposing sides. Kenyan Environment Minister Deborah Barasa proposed the idea of finalizing a treaty now and addressing specific details at a later date. (August 14, 2025)
