Last Thursday on 28 September at about 5 PM, a fire broke out in an apartment building between Troonstraat and Zeedijk, leading to a quick response from emergency services. The fire started on the fourth floor and spread rapidly, filling the area with flames and smoke. A resident saw the fire and entered the building to help, trying to rescue anyone trapped inside the burning apartment.
What happened during the apartment fire in Ostend?
The rescuer later described his frightening experience of finding a victim in a smoke-filled apartment. He felt a hand on the ground, pulled it, and managed to get the injured man to the exit. He carried the man down the stairs on his shoulder. The victim had serious burns on his hands and face and was taken to the hospital but he died.
Firefighters worked to put out the fire and secure the building, while an investigation began to find out what caused it. Authorities are gathering evidence to understand what happened. The resident who risked his life to save another person has been widely recognized.
