On December 26, 2024, an accident occurred on Benoît Ballonstraat in Mechelen. A car hit two young girls aged 18 and 19, who were walking at about 8:20 PM. The 18-year-old girl died from her injuries despite the efforts of paramedics. Her 19-year-old friend was seriously injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
What led to the incident in Mechelen?
After the crash, the driver ran away, leading to a search by the police. They looked at security camera footage to find out who he was. Things worsened when the driver’s body was found dead in Holsbeek, which is near the E314 highway, just after the accident. His death was confirmed to have been a suicide. Investigations are currently underway by police as to what happened and why.
Police Spokesman Dirk Van de Sande for Rivierenland further commented on the scenario. He feels sorry for the families of the victims and stated that this incident has disturbed the community in real. He further said how the death of the young man, the serious injury to the other person, and the suicide of the driver have been a big shock for the people of Mechelen and the whole area.
