“Agreements are expected to be finalized on nuclear deterrence cooperation,” stated the official briefing reporters. “It is highly likely that German service members will, for the first time, join a French nuclear exercise in the autumn.”
In a pivotal March speech, Macron announced that several European nations, including Germany, had committed to strengthening cooperation on nuclear deterrence. This includes options like participation in Poker, simulating air-launched nuclear strikes, and the temporary deployment of nuclear-capable French Rafale fighter jets.
An Elysée Palace official suggested that Paris and Berlin would advance nuclear deterrence discussions this week. “Substantial progress on forward deterrence will be evident one year after the Île-Longue speech, with initial signs appearing [on Friday],” they informed reporters.
The discussions occur as European governments reconsider their reliance on the U.S. for security. The ministerial meeting is set against a backdrop of mounting pressure from China and an uncertain transatlantic alliance, according to the German official.
