Unfortunately, reintegrating Russian teams is currently unfeasible. The national teams are too intertwined with propaganda, making it difficult to separate them. It’s regrettable to acknowledge this impossibility, especially as we stand fully with Ukraine. It’s unfortunate for children not to play together, as the goal is to keep them unaffected by the war. However, this isn’t feasible now, as football would cease, and Ukraine wouldn’t participate. This sad reality results from the war.
Regarding the Israel situation, any violation of FIFA statutes must be addressed. The issue of teams playing from settlements in Palestinian territories, which FIFA statutes prohibit, has been postponed for years. Though politically challenging, it’s not legally complex, and sanctions are necessary. We should consider precedents, such as cases involving Crimea or former Yugoslavia, to determine suitable sanctions. If violations persist, sanctions should increase, upholding a rules-based system and respecting territorial lines.
Upon playing Israel, donations were directed to Gaza’s victims, not out of disregard for October 7th victims but because of ongoing attacks on impoverished children in Gaza who needed assistance.
Ultimately, it’s crucial to establish effective bridges that operate when conflicts subside. Having projects in Palestine for decades, focusing on training girls and women as coaches, and similar endeavors in Jordan, connects us deeply to the region. Understanding the challenges and acknowledging the good people in Israel, Jordan, and the area strengthens our ties through these initiatives.
