Bratislava – Peter Pellegrini, President of the Slovak Republic, expressed his approval of the European Union (EU) member states' decision to fully admit Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area starting January 1 of next year. This announcement was relayed by the communication department of the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic to TASR.
In his statement, the President emphasized that this move would enhance the protection of the EU’s external borders against illegal migration.
Pellegrini has consistently advocated for the expansion of the Schengen area, including during his tenure as Prime Minister. He supported Croatia's accession to Schengen, arguing that expanding the area is essential for more robust protection of the EU’s external borders. He has also voiced criticism regarding the implementation of border controls between EU member states, which he believes undermine the core principles of the Schengen Agreement. (December 12)
