The Most Influential Encyclicals of the Catholic Church: A Brief Overview

The visitation of Leo regarding papal encyclicals.

An encyclical is a formal letter authored by the Pope intended to instruct, guide, or deliberate on significant matters of faith, morality, social life, or current global challenges. Originating from the Greek word enkyklios, meaning “circular” or “addressed to all,” they were initially letters sent to various bishops for distribution among the faithful.

Encyclicals have four main characteristics: they are written by the Pope, carry substantial doctrinal and pastoral significance, usually target bishops but sometimes are for all believers and even all of humanity. They offer profound insights into issues affecting global society at various historical moments.

For instance, when Leo XIII issued Rerum Novarum in 1891, he used the encyclical to address social and labor issues that arose with the Industrial Revolution. Similarly, Pope Francis released Laudato Si’ to reflect on environmental stewardship.

Essentially, an encyclical is one of the Pope’s principal avenues for officially conveying teachings to the Church and the world. Though it does not carry the same authority as a dogmatic definition ex cathedra, it represents one of the most crucial documents of the Catholic Church’s ordinary teaching. It frequently establishes the Church’s official stance on relevant contemporary and future matters.

Some of the most impactful encyclicals in history.

-Rerum Novarum (1891).- Authored by Leo XIII, significant to the current pontiff’s choice of name, Leo XIV. This encyclical marks the onset of the modern social doctrine of the Church, addressing workers’ rights, fair wages, private property, and criticizing both unrestrained capitalism and revolutionary socialism. Its influence was considerable on 19th and 20th-century Christian social policy.

-Quadragesimo Anno (1931).- Written by Pius XI, published forty years after the former, it tackles social justice, economic organization, subsidiarity principles, and economic structuring of societies, explicitly criticizing monopolies and totalitarianism.

-Pacem in Terris (1963).- Authored by John XXIII, this remarkable encyclical, written amidst the Cold War, addresses global peace, human rights, nuclear disarmament, and international collaboration, standing as one of the most influential encyclicals beyond the Catholic realm.

-Humanae Vitae (1968).- Penned by Paul VI, this encyclical provoked significant debate in the 20th century, dealing with marriage, sexuality, openness to life, and opposing artificial contraception.

-Redemptor Hominis (1979).- John Paul II wrote this as his first encyclical. It explores human dignity, delves into human rights, religious liberty, and the connection between Christ and humanity, paving the way for one of the longest pontificates in history.

-Evangelium Vitae (1995).- Another encyclical by John Paul II, it emphasizes the defense of human life, addressing abortion, euthanasia, and bioethics, shaping the Church’s teachings on life in its concluding years.

-Deus Caritas Est (2005).- Authored by Benedict XVI, it examines Christian love, charity, and the relationship between faith and social action, also marking Benedict XVI’s first encyclical.

-Laudato Si’ (2015).- Written by Pope Francis, it is arguably the 21st century’s most renowned encyclical, discussing integral ecology, notably climate change, the environment, and social justice. It is frequently cited in political sustainability debates, inspiring many agendas aiming to improve the planet—a topic deserving of extensive discussion.

-Fratelli Tutti (2020).- Another encyclical by Pope Francis, published five years after the previous one, addressing universal fraternity, social friendship, migrations, and cultural and religious dialogue, issued during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If I had a euro for every time the Pope dropped an encyclical, I’d be able to buy a proper coffee instead of that instant rubbish they serve at the office. 📜☕️
