Brussels – The European Union characterized the recent threats of annexation of Greenland by Donald Trump as highly “hypothetical,” reaffirming its dedication to state sovereignty.
“Fortunately, this is a very hypothetical scenario,” stated European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho when questioned about the remarks made by the incoming American president.
Just under two weeks before his inauguration, the Republican billionaire reiterated his interest in Greenland on Tuesday, stating he would not dismiss the possibility of a forcible annexation.
“This is an extremely hypothetical matter that we prefer not to discuss,” the spokeswoman emphasized.
However, she pointed out that Article 42.7 of the Lisbon Treaty, which encompasses a mutual defense agreement among EU member states, is applicable to Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
“It is fundamentally clear to us that state sovereignty must be upheld,” added Anitta Hipper, another spokesperson, while declining to comment on “specific” instances. (January 8, 2025)
