Tech Chief Suggests Possible Delay in EU’s Key AI Regulations

In light of intense lobbying concerning the rules, including efforts from the U.S. administration following Donald Trump’s election, companies are awaiting further guidance or technical standards to help fulfill their obligations.

Providers of the most advanced AI models must comply with new obligations starting August 2, yet a crucial code of practice guide is still not available.

Recently, the industry has advocated for a stop-the-clock mechanism, implying that application dates would be postponed if standards and guidance are not ready in time.

On Friday, some EU ministers expressed a willingness to consider delaying the restrictions.

The industry’s call for a stop-the-clock approach is “reasonable,” according to Dariusz Standerski, Poland’s junior digital minister, in an interview with POLITICO. However, he stated that simply delaying deadlines “is not the way.”

“We first need a plan: what we want to accomplish within those extra months,” he mentioned during the Luxembourg meeting, which he chaired under the Polish Council presidency. Only then would Poland be “open” to the idea, he noted.
