Bratislava – Slovakia will abstain from voting in Brussels regarding modifications to the Green Deal. Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee) announced this on social media on Wednesday. The European Council on Environment will discuss these changes on Thursday (September 18) in Brussels, according to TASR.
“Decisions are set to be made concerning additional aspects of the Green Deal. One major point is the intention to accelerate emission standards, shifting their application from 2050 to 2040. This will further push European industry beyond our borders. Slovakia will not support this,” stated Tomáš Taraba.
Merely agreeing with the ideas from Brussels officials is insufficient
He underscored that the power of nations in Brussels should be demonstrated through their capacity to protect their citizens’ interests, rather than simply “passively agreeing with the ideas of Brussels officials.”
Taraba also noted the possibility of rescinding the ban on the sale of combustion engines. This ban was a key component of the Green Deal, compelling car manufacturers to invest heavily in electric vehicles. “Now, seeing the poor economic performance of European car manufacturers, they have concluded it is necessary to lift this ban,” he remarked. According to him, the Green Deal lacks a solid scientific and economic foundation, labeling it an ideological political concept. (September 17)
