Eleven air-conditioned cinemas and the same number of libraries in Rome are opening their doors for free to residents facing a heatwave, announced municipal authorities, as reported by AFP.
Eleven cinemas and an equal number of libraries are part of this initiative from July 23 to August 4.
“Climate change, unfortunately, is a reality. It impacts people’s lives, health, social connections, and their ability to perform daily activities,” said Massimiliano Smerillo, Rome’s deputy mayor for culture.
“These places, considered climate shelters, will offer residents a chance to escape isolation caused by the inability to be outdoors,” he added.
Ten Italian films, including a recent “Romeo and Juliet” adaptation, will be shown in the cinemas, with two screenings each afternoon, depending on availability.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri supported the initiative, allowing people to enjoy films while escaping the heat.
Average temperatures in Rome have increased by 3 degrees Celsius since the 1980s, compared to around 2 degrees in other European capitals, according to a report by Istat published in June.
