Swiss and European politicians offered their condolences, and the incoming Swiss president postponed his New Year’s speech following a tragic fire at a ski resort in French-speaking southern Switzerland that resulted in multiple fatalities.
Swiss media reports that a bar in Crans-Montana, Valais, caught fire around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. During a morning press conference, authorities indicated that several dozen people are feared dead, with about 100 injured, many seriously. The victims likely include nationals from various countries, given the resort’s international popularity.
The newly appointed Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who took office on January 1, shared on X: “What should have been a moment of joy turned, in the night in Crans-Montana, into a mourning that affects the whole of Switzerland and abroad.”
