Brussels – Sweden is the sole producer of Swedish coffee cheese, which has now received protection in the EU.
This unique northern delicacy has been added to the EU’s register of products with protected designation of origin.
According to a press release from the EU Commission, “Traditionally cut into small pieces and placed in hot coffee, it is enjoyed warm, where its soft texture and delicate flavor are enhanced.”
Coffee cheese is a fresh cheese made from unhomogenized milk sourced from reindeer, goats, or cows, primarily in the northern regions of Lapland, Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland, Härjedalen, and Ångermanland. The cheese is typically cut into pieces and added to coffee.
There are now over 3,600 products protected in the EU’s register.
