Stockholm – In response to a series of severe bomb attacks earlier this year, the Swedish government has swiftly prepared a new bill aimed at enhancing regulations around the handling of explosives. Some of these explosives are suspected to have originated from construction sites.
A significant issue has been the municipalities’ inadequate oversight regarding the management of legal explosives.
The proposed legislation mandates that the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency will oversee municipal compliance in this area. Municipalities will be required to evaluate the potential risk of explosives falling into the wrong hands when issuing permits.
Carl-Oskar Bohlin (Moderates), the Minister for Civil Defense, noted that the government is also contemplating further tightening of laws that were not addressed in this expedited process.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (Moderates) highlighted that many of the bomb attacks over the winter involved smuggled high-powered fireworks and bangers. He mentioned that Sweden is collaborating with the EU to establish stricter regulations on pyrotechnics.
“It is crucial that we exert strong pressure against all types of explosive materials contributing to the current wave of violence,” emphasized Strömmer.
