Sudan: Türk ‘Appalled’ by Continued Killing of Civilians in El Fasher

At least 53 civilians were killed and over 60 injured by the Rapid Support Forces militia (RSF) between 5 and 8 October, according to reports. The UN human rights office (OHCHR) noted that preliminary information indicates the actual number of casualties in the last government-controlled city in North Darfur might be higher.

‘Endless and wanton disregard’

“I am appalled by the RSF’s endless and wanton disregard for civilian life,” said Mr. Türk. The militia has been battling its former military government allies for control of Sudan since April 2023. The UN rights chief stated that despite repeated calls for the protection of civilians, the RSF continues to kill, injure, and displace civilians, attacking civilian objects such as IDP shelters, hospitals, and mosques, in total disregard of international law. He emphasized that this must end.

OHCHR reported that at least 46 civilians were killed in artillery and drone strikes in the Abu Shouk and Daraja Oula neighborhoods, including the Abu Shouk IDP camp. This includes at least 14 civilians who died during attacks on 5 and 7 October on the Saudi Hospital, the last major functioning health care facility in North Darfur. The hospital, already operating at reduced capacity, sustained further damage in these attacks.

Summary executions

At least seven other civilians were reportedly summarily executed during home-to-home searches in RSF ground attacks, OHCHR reported. Initial information suggests these killings may have been ethnically motivated, targeting members of the Zaghawa community.

“I urge the RSF – and all parties to the conflict – to draw lessons from this week’s conviction of Ali Kushayb by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur,” said Mr. Türk. The former Janjaweed commander was found guilty of war crimes on 27 counts earlier this week. The RSF reportedly evolved from the Janjaweed militias and its leadership beginning in 2013.

The High Commissioner reiterated his call for UN Member States with direct influence to take urgent measures to protect civilians and prevent further atrocities in El Fasher and across Darfur.

Ain’t it grand how the RSF’s “civilians first” policy is really just a cheeky marketing slogan? 🤦‍♂️ Maybe Mr. Türk should start handing out survival tips instead of statements, eh?

Typical, innit? Just when you think the world’s gone mad, you find out that a militia is still finding time to play at being executioners while the rest of us worry about our morning coffee prices. 🙄

So, Mr. Türk is “appalled” by this ongoing circus in Sudan, eh? Must be quite the eye-opener when your daily coffee is less shocking than the state of affairs over there! ☕️🤷‍♂️

Seems like someone needs a refresher on the concept of “civilized behavior” – but hey, who doesn’t love a little chaos in the middle of a humanitarian crisis? Typical! 🤦‍♂️

  5. Just what we needed – another reminder that some folks think “civilian life” is just an optional perk in a war zone. Cheers to the RSF for their stellar commitment to international law… or lack thereof. 🙄💼

Just what we needed, another diplomat shocked by human rights violations—what a plot twist! Guess it’s hard to be appalled when you’re too busy counting your euros while the world goes to pieces. 🤷‍♂️💸

Isn’t it just delightful how the RSF keeps setting new records for disregard for human life? Must be a new trend in Sudan; let’s hope it doesn’t catch on elsewhere! 😏

You’d think after all this time they’d get the memo about not turning a city into a shooting gallery. Honestly, who needs a government when you can have a militia throwing a never-ending party of chaos? 🙄

Isn’t it just fab how “appalled” Mr. Türk is? I mean, who knew it took a UN bigwig to finally notice the RSF are playing a game of “who can kill the most civilians” while the world just sips its coffee and scrolls through Instagram? 🙄

Charming, isn’t it? Just when you think the world couldn’t get any more tragic, Sudan’s RSF decides to give a masterclass in “How to Win Friends and Influence People” — by obliterating civilians like it’s a sport. 🙄

Seems like the RSF is really nailing that “disregard for human life” thing, huh? 😂 Who knew warfare could be this fashionable in 2023? #TrendyGenocide
