Sub-Saharan African Journalists Tour the European Newsroom

On Thursday, November 21, a delegation of 12 journalists from seven sub-Saharan African countries visited the European Newsroom (ENR) at the Belga News Agency’s offices in Brussels.

The group included media professionals from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali, Togo, Senegal, and Niger, representing various media outlets across print, radio, and television.

During the visit, participants learned about the European Newsroom’s operations, its collaboration with 23 news agencies, and the variety of media formats it produces daily.

A dynamic discussion took place between ENR representatives Victoria Becker and Tim Kohnen and the visiting journalists, focusing on journalism related to the EU and the ENR’s efforts to enhance cooperation among its partner news agencies. This includes collaborative projects like the weekly feature “Key Stories” and various joint interviews and workshops.

The visiting journalists also shared insights into the journalism landscape and practices in their home countries, fostering mutual understanding and even sparking a brainstorming session on potential collaboration between European and African journalists.

The European External Action Service (EEAS), which is tasked with coordinating the EU’s foreign and security policy, organized the visit. This initiative is part of its goal to provide journalists with firsthand knowledge of EU operations, encouraging informed dialogue and stronger international relationships.

Ah, nothing quite like a group of Sub-Saharan African journalists touring a European newsroom—because, you know, nothing says “global cooperation” like learning how to cover EU bureaucracies that even locals can’t make sense of, all while sipping on overpriced coffee and pretending to understand the concept of “collaboration” over a good ol’ continental breakfast.

  2. Ah, nothing quite says “global journalism exchange” like a gaggle of sub-Saharan journalists popping over to the European Newsroom to learn about our elaborate coffee breaks and the fine art of turning bureaucratic jargon into a headline—what a delightful way to bridge the gap between reporting on a continent in crisis and our riveting discussions on whether to pronounce ‘Brussels’ as ‘Broozels’!

  3. Preach Man Avatar

Ah, nothing quite like a group of Sub-Saharan journalists descending upon the European Newsroom in Brussels, where the locals have apparently decided that sharing the secrets of how to report the EU’s endless bureaucracy is the same as teaching a cat to swim—pure brilliance in action!

Ah, nothing quite says “global collaboration” like a bunch of sub-Saharan journalists taking a jolly jaunt to the European Newsroom, where they can marvel at how we manage to churn out more press releases than they have stories, all while we pretend that our bureaucracy is anything but a perplexing game of Twister!

Ah, nothing quite says “let’s bridge the cultural divide” like a gaggle of sub-Saharan journalists being whisked into the heart of Brussels to marvel at the bureaucratic ballet of European newsrooms—because who doesn’t dream of swapping tales of censorship for a crash course in EU jargon?
