Ljubljana – The two leading organizations representing Slovenian farmers, the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia and the Cooperative Union of Slovenia, have voiced their opposition to the proposed centralization of funding for the common agricultural policy. They advocate for maintaining the existing dual pillar structure, which includes the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
In an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Robert Golob prior to this week’s European Council meeting, they expressed grave concerns regarding the European Union’s proposed multiannual financial framework for the period following 2027. They urged him to take all necessary measures to safeguard the Slovenian food chain.
The organizations emphasized that, given the current geopolitical instability, climate change, and evolving trade dynamics, food security within the EU is essential for the stability of the entire union. “The common agricultural policy remains a vital tool for ensuring access to safe, sustainable, and affordable food, while also supporting millions of farmers and sustaining the vitality of rural communities,” they stated in a press release.
They warned that the European Commission’s proposals, which seek to consolidate EU funding into a single fund, threaten the autonomy and integrity of the common agricultural policy. “Such approaches risk diminishing its effectiveness by placing it within a broader framework that lacks a clear focus,” the organizations remarked.
