Ljubljana – During the 29th conference of Slovenian diplomacy, concerns were raised regarding Europe’s diminished role in the global arena amid shifting power dynamics. Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon and Prime Minister Robert Golob stressed the significance of Slovenia’s principled stance in their remarks to Slovenian diplomats.
Fajon noted the evolving power relationships in a world marked by instability and highlighted the EU’s weakened position. She expressed hope that the EU could shift from being an observer to a more influential player, contingent upon overcoming internal divisions.
She asserted that Slovenia has positioned itself within the EU as “the voice of reason that listens while advocating clear positions; a nation that fosters connections rather than divisions.”
Prime Minister Golob echoed the sentiment regarding Europe’s vulnerability, characterizing it as merely one participant in a larger global context. “If Europe doesn’t reform its operational approach, it risks becoming an inconsequential player,” he cautioned.
He warned that the quality of life in Europe could be jeopardized, stating, “Without a competitive economy and advanced technologies, maintaining our current standard of living will be impossible.”
President Nataša Pirc Musar also spoke about the challenges Europe faces, indicating that the EU is losing influence on the political stage. “If we allow others to negotiate peace on European territory, they will not prioritize EU interests,” she remarked, advocating for a more united EU and deeper, pragmatic strategic thinking in foreign and security policy matters.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sibiha addressed the diplomats at Slovenia’s 61 diplomatic missions abroad via video link, emphasizing the need to enhance cooperation between the EU, its member states, and Ukraine to bolster defense capabilities and expedite Ukraine’s integration with the EU.
