Ljubljana – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob voiced regret over the U.S. decision on Thursday to impose sanctions on four International Criminal Court (ICC) judges, including Slovenian judge Beti Hohler. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Slovenia will advocate for the immediate activation of the European Union’s blocking statute, given that Hohler is an EU citizen.
According to the U.S. government, the four ICC judges “actively participated in illegal and baseless actions of the ICC aimed at the U.S. or our close ally Israel.”
The Prime Minister’s office confirmed Slovenia’s full support for Hohler as she fulfills her nine-year mandate at the ICC, which began in 2024.
Hohler is the only EU citizen among the ICC judges facing sanctions. “Slovenia will propose the immediate activation of the European Union’s blocking statute due to the inclusion of an EU citizen on the U.S. sanctions list,” they remarked.
“Slovenia remains and will continue to be a steadfast supporter of the independence and impartiality of this key international criminal judicial institution and its personnel,” the Prime Minister’s cabinet declared. (June 6)
