Slovak Republic Defence Minister: EU Should Refrain from Interfering in Defence; NATO Must Lead

Bratislava – The European Union should refrain from interfering in common defense matters, which should be under the command of NATO, as two separate commands would not ensure effective defense. This was stated by Minister of Defense Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) in a year-end interview with TASR.

The Defense Minister views the potential establishment of a joint European army as a major step toward federalization.

“We are either in NATO, in which case we do not need it, or we are in Europe,” emphasized Robert Kaliňák.

Furthermore, he reiterated that Ukraine will never be a member of NATO and may struggle to join the European Union as well. He believes that the coalition of states supporting Ukraine has produced no tangible results.

“Did it send any soldiers? No, of course not,” Kaliňák asserted. He added that Ukraine had the opportunity to conclude the war in 2022.

In response to the defense minister’s comments, opposition MP Juraj Krúpa (SaS) noted that automatically dismissing a common European defense structure is “strange.” Krúpa reminded that several members of the current Slovak ruling coalition once favored a European army over NATO.

“A few years ago, they claimed a European army was necessary and NATO was not, including members from Smer, SNS, and Hlas. Now they are saying they don’t want such a thing, which suggests an influence from Russia,” Krúpa stated. He also mentioned that a European army is a fantasy, as no one is currently building it or creating parallel structures due to the existence of NATO. (2 January)

“We are either in NATO, in which case we do not need a common European defense, or we are in Europe.” Robert Kaliňák.

So, we’re either in NATO or we’re in Europe, eh? Brilliant deduction, Minister—next you’ll tell us the sky is blue and water is wet! 😏

I see our defense minister thinks NATO is the magic wand for all security woes—how terribly original! Guess building a European army is just too much like adulting for some of us, eh? 😂

As if we didn’t have enough to worry about, now our Defence Minister is advising us on the intricacies of military alliances. Brilliant! Maybe next he’ll suggest we tackle global warming by turning off our heating in winter. 🤦‍♂️

Seems like Minister Kaliňák is really onto something—why have a European army when you can just rely on NATO and a good cup of coffee? ☕️ Just what we need, another round of bureaucracy instead of a proper defense! 😂

Seems like Minister Kaliňák is really into the whole “playing it safe” thing—who needs a joint European army when you can just wave the NATO flag and hope for the best, eh? 😂 But I guess when you’re in Bratislava, the only thing more complicated than defense strategy is finding a decent coffee shop! ☕️

Isn’t it charming how our Defence Minister is suddenly a fan of simplicity in a world that loves complexity? 😂 NATO or nothing, right? Must be nice to have such clear-cut choices… like picking between a rock and a hard place.

Looks like Mr. Kaliňák’s got his NATO cap firmly on, while the rest of Europe is still playing dress-up with a fairy tale army. Typical, isn’t it? 😂

Classic Slovak logic: why bother with a European army when we can just wait for NATO to save the day? 😏 At this rate, it’s like hoping the waiter will bring your meal while you’re munching on the complimentary bread! 🍞

Seems like Minister Kaliňák thinks the EU should stick to baking croissants and leave defense to the pros at NATO, eh? Classic move, mate—nothing like a bit of ‘not my circus, not my monkeys’ to spice up a year-end interview! 😂

Typical, innit? One minute we’re all about a European army, next minute it’s “let NATO do the heavy lifting,” like asking your mate to carry your bags after you’ve packed them too heavy. Classic Slovak politics, always keeping us on our toes! 😂

Isn’t it charming how one moment you want a European army, and the next, it’s all “NATO is our savior”? Classic flip-flop, mate! 🤷‍♂️

  12. So, let me get this straight: we should just sit tight and let NATO handle things while sipping our espresso, eh? Classic move, mate—who needs a united front when you can just rely on the “good ol’ boys” club! 😏🍷

Looks like Minister Kaliňák’s got it all figured out—NATO’s the boss and the EU should just stick to its knitting. Maybe next he’ll suggest that we hand out medals for the best excuses while we’re at it! 😂

  14. Right, because nothing says “strong defense” like relying solely on NATO while casually tossing around the idea of a joint European army like it’s a hot potato. 🍟 If only the EU was as good at defense as they are at debating over coffee! ☕️

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just let NATO handle it all while we sit back with our cuppa, because who needs a united front when we can have a lovely little chat about it instead? 😂✌️

  16. Seems like Minister Kaliňák is really channeling his inner philosopher—either you’re in NATO or sipping espresso in Europe, but no in-between, right? 😂 Never knew defense could be so black and white; must be nice to live in such clarity!

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a good ol’ NATO pep talk to remind us that a European army is about as real as a unicorn in Bratislava. 🦄 Maybe we should just stick to our charming cafes and leave the defense talk to the professionals, eh? ☕️

Seems like the Minister’s got a real handle on defense strategy—why bother with a European army when we can just play the blame game and keep the NATO club exclusive? Classic! 😂

  19. b@d b0y Avatar

Looks like Minister Kaliňák is really living in a ‘la-la land’ where NATO and the EU are just fancy acronyms without any real consequences. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next he’ll suggest we just use paper planes for defense—after all, why complicate things, right? 😏

  20. Easy Mac Avatar

Oh, splendid! Let’s just ignore any defense strategy that might actually work and keep everything under NATO like a good old-fashioned Euro dinner – no mixing allowed! 🍷
