Slovak Defense Minister: We Reviewed Anti-Drone Protection Funding with EU Nations

Bratislava – Slovakia has commenced the establishment of its air defense system, featuring six batteries of the Barak MX system as its primary component. However, Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) remarked that deploying such extensive systems against low-cost drones is not resource-efficient. He made these comments on Friday following a video conference with ministers from various EU member states and representatives from the European Commission (EC), as reported by TASR based on a Ministry of Defense post on social media.

“Every nation is working to identify the most effective solutions for counter-drone defense, and today’s session focused on how to leverage European resources for financing a multi-layered counter-drone defense system,” emphasized Robert Kaliňák. He indicated that this was only the preliminary discussion regarding the initiative. “Further discussions will take place, and avenues will be explored for the EU to also aid in providing this equipment in the spirit of solidarity,” the minister added.

Debate surrounding counter-drone defense has intensified along NATO’s eastern flank following recent incursions into the airspace of several European NATO members, including Estonia and Poland, by Russian aircraft and drones.

Friday’s meeting included representatives from Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Ukraine, along with EU’s high representative for foreign affairs Kaja Kallas and a NATO representative.

EU Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius expressed that countries along the EU’s eastern border view the construction of a “wall against drones” as an urgent priority for safeguarding against Russian airspace violations. Member states are now encouraged to collaborate with national experts to formulate detailed technical plans.

This initiative is anticipated to be discussed at the upcoming informal meeting of EU leaders in Copenhagen, Denmark, and during the European Council summit in Brussels, Belgium, in October. (September 26)

“We will seek options for the EU to also contribute to the multi-layered counter-drone protection equipment in the spirit of solidarity.” Robert Kaliňák

  1. Well, isn’t it charming? Six fancy batteries to fend off drones that cost less than a fancy dinner in Paris. Just what we needed—more bureaucratic chatter while the drones are probably having a pint at the pub! 🍻

So, we’re protecting ourselves from pesky drones with fancy systems while the budget’s tighter than a pair of old shoes? Classic EU move, mate! 😂

  3. Looks like we’re gearing up to take on the mighty drone menace with six shiny batteries—just what every budget-conscious nation dreams of, eh? 💸 Who needs efficient spending when you can throw EU millions at high-tech solutions for pesky little flying toys?

  4. Right, so let’s build a fortress against toy drones while we’re at it. I’m sure our wallets will thank us for the “spirit of solidarity” – maybe they’ll even send us a thank-you card! 😏💸

So, we’re throwing millions at a fancy anti-drone system while waving goodbye to our wallets—brilliant strategy, lads! 😏 Can’t wait to see how our “solidarity” will keep those pesky drones at bay! 🛩️💸

Sure, because nothing says “effective use of funds” quite like a high-tech air defense system aimed at flimsy drones. Who knew it took a video call with half of Europe to figure out throwing money at problems was still the go-to strategy? 🤷‍♂️💸

  7. Tough Nut Avatar

Isn’t it charming how we’re gearing up to tackle low-cost drones with the sophistication usually reserved for a royal banquet? Bravo, gentlemen, let’s throw some EU money at it and call it a day! 💸🥳

So, we’re building a “wall against drones” now, eh? Because nothing says “cutting-edge defense” quite like a fancy air defense system aimed at pesky little buzzing toys. 🐝💰

  9. Sir Shark Avatar

Typical! Who knew defending against pesky drones would require a budget the size of a small country’s GDP? Maybe we should just give them a stern talking-to instead. 😂💸

  10. Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more layers of defense against drones that cost less than our morning coffee ☕. Maybe we should just send them a sternly worded letter instead? 😂

Seems like we’re throwing euros at the sky while drones do their tango above us. If only they had a ‘Buy One, Get One Free’ deal on those fancy batteries! 😏💸

There is a familiar move in every conversation about quitting. Someone gives up cigarettes, announces they feel wonderful, and the rest of us are invited to take their word for it. A new survey by Ipsos, commissioned by We Are Innovation, tried the opposite. Instead of asking the people who quit, it asked those who shared a roof, car, and dinner table with them.
