Sint-Truiden Distributes 10-kg Salt Bags; Moers Emphasizes Safety

Sint-Truiden (Eurotoday) – Sint-Truiden asks residents to clear sidewalks of snow. Alderman Filip Moers provides 10-kg salt bags, adds neighbourhood pickup points, and urges cooperation to keep streets safe this winter.

As VRT News reported, the city of Sint-Truiden is asking residents to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice this winter.

“We do our best to keep roads and city buildings accessible, but we also count on residents to clear their own sidewalks of snow in a timely manner,”

says Filip Moers, Alderman for Facility Management (Vooruit).

What is Sint-Truiden doing to keep sidewalks safe this winter?

Each household gets a 10-kilogram bag of road salt to help with this.

“We hope everyone will contribute to road safety during these winter days,”

says Moers.

“That commitment is there: many bags have already been collected.”

Until now, residents had to pick up the salt at the city’s work centre. The city has now set up neighbourhood collection points, making it easier for residents to access the salt and clear the sidewalks in front of their homes.

Gritting trucks in Sint-Truiden follow a fixed plan. Main roads, busy intersections, and heavily used streets are treated first. While municipal crews handle these critical routes, residents are responsible for keeping pedestrian paths safe in their area.

“This way, we make it feasible for residents with limited mobility or those without a car to help out,”

says Moers.

“We also ask for understanding from our neighbours, for example, to help out when residents are struggling themselves.”

Various other cities in Belgium offer pedestrian safety programmes. Leuven has provided free 10 kg bags of salt (grit) to residents since 2020, with pickups being available at designated pickup spots (usually local businesses).

The town encourages all residents to clear their sidewalks in front of their houses in order to improve safety for pedestrians. Municipal employees are concentrated on resetting main arteries, busy intersections, and all open spaces. Ghent offers salt and clears priority streets, but also encourages residents to clear the footpaths adjacent to their homes.
