Sint-Lucia Ranst Inaugurates Green Oasis Playground with 300 Guests

Oelegem (Eurotoday) – Sint-Lucia Primary School in Oelegem opened its new Green Oasis playground on December 12, 2025, supported by €15,000 from the Province, Jan De Haes, Katlin Hofmans, parents, and volunteers.

As Gva News reported, Sint-Lucia Primary School in Ranst, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, officially opened its new “Green Oasis at School” on Friday, Dec 12, 2025. The ribbon was cut during the Christmas market by Principal Kevin Francken, Provincial Executive Member Jan De Haes, and Alderman for Education Katlin Hofmans (PIT).

After the opening, the school received the Green Oasis label for creating a nature-friendly learning space. While the school was already considered green, the playground next to the main building had long been fully paved.

What makes Sint-Lucia School’s new Green Oasis playground special?

On Friday, December 12th, 2025, nearly 300 parents, students, and residents gathered at Sint-Lucia School for a Christmas market. The event also marked the official opening of the school’s new playground. Provincial Executive Member Jan De Haes, responsible for Environment and Nature, presented the school with the “Green Oases” label.

The project received €15,000 in support from the Province of Antwerp. Experts from the Voorkempen Regional Landscape offered guidance on planting, design, and project management. MOS Antwerp helped expand the project’s support network.

Officials mentioned that the playground was built with the help of the parent committee and volunteers, who contributed funding, installed equipment, and built a sandbox. The municipality of Ranst also supported the project by providing waste containers for rubble. The cooperation of the province, the city, local organisations, and volunteers made the project possible.

Since September 2025, teachers, parents, and the maintenance team worked together to remove 180 square meters of paving. They replaced it with a play hill with a viewing platform and slide, four new trees, woodland plants, perennials, and fruit-bearing “candy” trees. The area also includes a sandbox and a nest swing. In November 2025, students joined in planting, gaining hands-on experience with the new greenery.

A playground called “Green Oasis”? Wow, just what we needed—more nature to remind us of our childhood while we sip overpriced coffee at the Christmas market. 🎄☕ #Priorities

Oh, sure, nothing screams “world-class playground” like a €15,000 makeover. I guess the kids will have to settle for nature’s finest while we all pretend that paving it over was a great idea in the first place. 😏🌳

  10. Oh joy, a playground that’s not just a sea of concrete! 🎉 Who knew turning a patch of asphalt into a “Green Oasis” could bring out 300 people? Next stop: a nature retreat in the middle of Antwerp! 🌳

Oh look, a “Green Oasis” playground in Belgium—because nothing says “we care about nature” like replacing 180 square meters of concrete with a slide and some trees. 🎉🍃 Must be nice to have €15k to splurge on a sandbox while the rest of us are still searching for parking! 😜

  14. Who knew turning a concrete jungle into a “Green Oasis” would take a village and a solid €15K? Must be nice for those kids to finally have a sandbox instead of a parking lot! 😂🌳

Finally, a playground that’s as green as the envy of every adult who remembers how fun it was to play outside! €15,000 well spent – because nothing says “education” like swapping concrete for a slide! 😂🌳

Oh, how lovely! A playground with a fancy label and a slide—because nothing says “nature-friendly” like 300 people gathering to celebrate a patch of grass in the middle of Antwerp. 🎉🌳

  18. Only in Belgium do we manage to turn a patch of concrete into a “Green Oasis” with a bit of €15k and 300 guests, while we all know the real fun is just waiting for the next holiday market 🍷🎄. Now, let’s hope the kids don’t mistake the “candy” trees for an actual dentist’s nightmare! 😂

Looks like Sint-Lucia has finally decided that a playground sans concrete is the way to go—who knew nature could be so trendy? 🎉 Must’ve taken ages to convince everyone that a few trees and a sandbox are the latest in eco-chic! 🌳😂
