Simion Barred from Entering Moldova Until 2028 Amid Security Concerns
George Simion, leader of Romania’s far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has been banned from entering Moldova until 2028 due to what authorities cite as national security concerns. The long-standing ban stems from Simion’s persistent campaign advocating for the unification of Moldova with Romania. On Monday, a Moldovan court is scheduled to review Simion’s request to lift the ban.
In response to recent accusations made by Simion alleging electoral fraud, a Moldovan government spokesperson urged political figures to avoid rhetoric that might undermine the democratic process.
“We continue to encourage everyone to go out and vote, and to make their voices heard—without fear,” said Daniel Vodă, spokesperson for the Moldovan government, in comments reported by Romania’s Digi24 news channel.
Romania’s Special Telecommunications Service, following a meeting with AUR representatives, confirmed that all necessary preparations for the upcoming election have been completed appropriately.
Simion’s warnings of potential election fraud have sparked concerns among political observers and opponents. Some interpret his comments as an attempt to delegitimize the election in advance, should the results not favor him.
Vlad Voiculescu, a Romanian Member of the European Parliament and member of the Save Romania Union (USR)—a party supporting rival candidate Cătălin Drulă—voiced these concerns on Facebook. “This candidate may have already revealed his strategy for the likely outcome of losing: refusing to accept defeat by blaming ‘manipulated’ media, intelligence services, and the so-called ‘system,’” Voiculescu wrote on Friday.
With the election approaching, tensions continue to rise around the conduct and integrity of the vote, while Moldovan and Romanian authorities strive to maintain order and promote voter turnout.
