Underpinned by the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Scientologists actively work to prevent exploitation, provide aid to survivors, and partner with organizations addressing the root causes of trafficking. This commitment was underscored during a recent town hall event at the Church of Scientology in Seattle, where experts from various sectors discussed the importance of education, legislation, and community support in tackling human trafficking.
A Comprehensive Approach to Tackling Trafficking
At the Seattle forum, held in conjunction with UN International Human Rights Day, the focus was on child sex trafficking and its prevalence in Washington state. The event, themed “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” featured speakers who emphasized the need for immediate action.
Butch Yarnell, Eastern Washington & Idaho Regional Coordinator for Shared Hope International, delivered a powerful keynote address. Highlighting the mission of his organization to combat sex trafficking through prevention and intervention, Yarnell shed light on the grim realities of trafficking in Washington. He stressed the importance of legislative support and grassroots initiatives to dismantle trafficking networks and support survivors. Yarnell also noted the passage of Senate Bill 6006 in 2024, which empowers survivors through civil protection orders, victim compensation without time limits, and the elimination of the statute of limitations for prosecuting sex trafficking cases. Seattle’s involvement in trafficking routes spanning Honolulu to Canada further underscored the urgency of addressing this crisis.
Educating Youth as a Means of Prevention
Dave Scattergood, a representative of Youth for Human Rights, presented educational resources designed to inform young people about their basic rights as outlined in the UDHR. These materials—including brochures, videos, and a free online program—aim to equip youth with the knowledge needed to protect themselves from exploitation. Scattergood emphasized the importance of education, stating, “It is vital that our youth are educated on their basic human rights to help prevent them from becoming victims of human trafficking crimes.”
European Insights and Challenges
Recently released data from EUROSTAT highlights the growing challenge of human trafficking in Europe. In 2022, the EU recorded 10,093 trafficking victims, a 41% increase from 2021. However, the number of convicted traffickers—just 2,097 in 2022—saw a 16.7% decrease over the same period, revealing a substantial gap between identifying victims and prosecuting perpetrators.
Ivan Arjona, the Scientology representative to the European Union and the UN, has been vocal about the need for cross-border collaboration, extensive educational initiatives, and strict legal measures to address trafficking across Europe. “Human trafficking is an unforgivable infringement on fundamental human rights,” Arjona remarked. He called for increased funding for community outreach in high-risk areas, tougher penalties for traffickers, and the empowerment of civil society organizations to engage youth in anti-trafficking education.
A Global Issue with Local Implications
According to the International Labor Organization, an estimated 27.6 million individuals are currently trapped in forced labor worldwide, generating $236 billion annually in illegal profits. On a local level, Washington state reported 202 cases of human trafficking last year, involving 367 victims, as identified by the National Human Trafficking Hotline. These statistics reflect the scope of the crisis and the need for both local and global solutions.
The Church of Scientology’s dedication to this cause is inspired by the vision of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, who believed human rights should be a reality for all, not just an ideal. Through initiatives like United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights, the Church fosters awareness, education, and activism worldwide.
