Serbia Commemorates Train Station Disaster Anniversary with Protests

Vučić dismissed the significance of Saturday’s events when questioned by journalists. “What’s the situation in Novi Sad? Is there some soccer game happening?” he remarked.

The authorities canceled all train services in the country on Friday, citing a bomb threat; however, news outlets indicate it was an effort to stop citizens from traveling to the city for the protests.

The initial demand for accountability over a tragedy attributed to government negligence soon turned into a year-long, nationwide protest movement. Extensive police violence exacerbated the upheaval, leading President Aleksandar Vučić to attempt to quell the dissent by pushing Prime Minister Miloš Vučević to step down along with his entire cabinet.

Serbia has been an EU candidate country since 2012, later beginning accession talks with the EU in 2013. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently encouraged Vučić and Serbia to make “tangible” progress towards joining.

Seems like the government’s priority is keeping the trains running on time—right to the soccer match! 🚂⚽️ Nothing like a little bomb scare to keep the masses from asking pesky questions, eh? Classic Serbia!

Sure, nothing says “we care” like canceling trains to keep the masses away from protesting a disaster. 🎭 Maybe they think a football match is more important than accountability, eh? 🤷‍♂️

Just another day in Serbia, where the train stations are a reminder of how well our government can sidestep accountability while still managing to keep the soccer scores in check. 🚉⚽️ Protests? Pfft, more like an inconvenience to the weekend plans!

Seems like the only thing getting a ticket to this disaster is the government’s ability to dodge accountability. 🚂💥 But hey, at least there’s a soccer match to distract the masses, right? 😂
