U.S. Warns of Tariffs to Protect Economic Interests
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, she emphasized that the U.S. will take necessary action to safeguard its economic security, ensuring protection for workers, businesses, and consumers.
The potential for retaliatory tariffs from Washington adds to recent trade measures introduced by former President Trump. Last week, Trump expanded tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, intensifying tensions between the U.S. and its trade partners.
During his first term in 2018, Trump imposed tariffs on EU steel and aluminum, prompting Brussels to respond with levies on American products such as bourbon and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
According to POLITICO, top aide to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Bjoern Seibert, recently traveled to Washington for discussions aimed at preventing a trade conflict.
Slovak Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is expected to be the highest-ranking EU official to visit Washington since Trump returned to office on January 20.
