Šefčovič in Washington Stresses the Need for a Balanced EU-US Trade Agreement

Brussels – European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, affirmed the EU’s commitment to achieving a fair and balanced trade agreement rather than imposing unwarranted tariffs during his recent working visit to Washington. This information was reported by a TASR correspondent in Brussels.

On the social media platform X Tuesday evening (European time), Šefčovič highlighted that over the past 24 hours, he engaged in intense yet fruitful discussions in Washington with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, high-ranking trade official Jamieson Greer from President Donald Trump’s administration, and Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council (NEC).

“The hard work continues,” Šefčovič stated in a brief message from Washington, emphasizing the value of transatlantic economic and trade cooperation to the new US administration since February 20. He had previously proposed to the American counterparts an agreement aimed at reducing tariffs on industrial products, including automobiles.

“The EU prioritizes a fair and balanced agreement over unjustified tariffs. We are aligned in our aim for industrial strength on both sides,” Šefčovič wrote on X.

On Thursday, March 20, Šefčovič announced that the European Union might delay implementing a set of countermeasures against US tariffs on steel and aluminum until mid-April. This follows the European Commission’s initial plan to enact these retaliatory measures starting in early April. (March 25)

  1. Typical EU charm, eh? All this talk about “fair and balanced” trade while secretly sharpening the tariff knives. It’s like a game of poker where everyone’s bluffing but no one wants to lose their chips! 😂💼

Just what we need—more “fruitful discussions” across the pond! 🍏 Let’s hope this trade agreement has more balance than my last attempt at a diet. #TariffTango 🕺

Gosh, who knew negotiating trade agreements involved so much, erm, “hard work”? 🤔 It’s like watching two chefs argue over who gets to burn the toast while the rest of us just want a decent breakfast! 🥴

Well, isn’t that adorable? Šefčovič puts on his best diplomatic face while juggling tariffs like a circus clown—hope he doesn’t trip over his own “balanced” ambition! 😂 Who knew trade agreements could be so thrilling, eh?

Oh, look at Šefčovič flexing his diplomatic muscles in Washington—how refreshing! Who knew balancing trade was more complex than juggling a few pints in a German beer garden? 🍺🤷‍♂️

Oh, splendid! Nothing screams “balanced” like a trade agreement where we pretend to play nice while both sides are sharpening their knives. 🇪🇺✈️ At least we won’t have to pay extra for the theatrics! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “balanced trade” quite like a prolonged negotiation over tariffs while everyone pretends to play nice. Reminds me of a game of chess where the pieces just sit there sipping espresso instead of actually moving. ☕️💼
