The People’s Party, governing in Castilla y León, is estimated to remain the largest party with 30 to 32 lawmakers but will not achieve a governing majority. They may seek a coalition with the far-right Vox, which is projected to obtain over 20 percent of the vote, increasing its seats from 13 to 17-19. Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, the regional president, formed the first PP-Vox coalition in 2022, which ended due to disputes over migration policies. Vox campaigned as a significant conservative force, hindering coalition talks in regions like Extremadura and Aragón, and negotiations in Castilla y León might also be challenging.
The Socialist Party aimed to leverage the feud between Sánchez and U.S. President Donald Trump over Iran to bolster their campaign. However, this strategy failed to garner significant support in Castilla y León, where Vox, the only party supporting Trump’s Iran stance, gained backing despite rising gas and fertilizer prices affecting rural voters.
National parties like the PP, the Socialists, and Vox dominated the election, but regional parties such as the Leonese People’s Union, Soria Now, and For Ávila secured up to seven seats. These parties aim to represent neglected rural voters disillusioned with mainstream parties and opposed to far-right views.
