Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized on Monday that the European Union should uphold a relationship of equality with the United States, rather than one of “vassalage” under the Trump administration.
Sánchez shared his pro-Atlanticism stance during a press conference alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Palacio de la Moncloa, where they discussed the current geopolitical landscape.
They examined issues including Ukraine, Venezuela, and Trump’s ambitions concerning Greenland, following his remarks about acquiring the territory “by fair means or foul.”
The Spanish leader noted that Madrid recently signed a declaration with other European nations regarding this issue, asserting that Arctic security can be assured.
He emphasized that collective security does not contradict the security of the United States.
“We are a pro-Atlanticist government that values the Atlantic Alliance, yet this relationship must not involve inequalities. It is essential to collaborate based on mutual respect and shared values among all Western nations,” he said, reiterating the importance of an equal partnership rather than one of “vassalage.”
He argued that defending these principles is crucial in the face of Russian President Vladímir Putin and “any situation involving the infringement of International Law,” referencing Trump’s Greenland intentions.
In response, Mitsotakis remarked that the future of Greenland should be determined by its people and Denmark, urging the European Union to lead in protecting the interests of its member states.
He expressed optimism that solutions to Arctic security challenges could benefit both sides of the Atlantic, advocating for a unified European Union.
The two leaders also acknowledged the strong bilateral relations between Spain and Greece, emphasizing the importance of cooperation on shared European agenda priorities.
They specifically highlighted the upcoming negotiations on the EU budget framework, particularly concerning the Common Agricultural Policy and the implementation of the migration pact.
Additionally, Sánchez and Mitsotakis celebrated the economic resurgence of Spain and Greece, noting that both countries were once seen as the “sick men of Europe” and are now viewed as examples of progress.
Sánchez also underscored the significance of the recent agreement between the EU and Mercosur, agreeing with Mitsotakis on the necessity of supporting Ukraine and striving for lasting peace in the Middle East. (January 12)
