Drones are reportedly being directed toward NATO territory, according to Baltic and Ukrainian officials.
Kyiv faces a delicate situation. Ukrainian officials have expressed regret over incidents with stray drones but maintain that attacks on Russian military and economic targets are lawful self-defense. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains committed to the bombing campaign, describing it as “sanctions” to weaken Russia.
Russia’s increasingly vulnerable air defenses are leading it to seek political pressure to stop Ukrainian attacks.
Mykola Bielieskov, a senior military analyst, explained to POLITICO that Russia aims to undermine Ukraine’s reputation among key supporting countries by creating tensions between Kyiv and the Baltic states.
However, Baltic officials do not hold Ukraine responsible for intentionally endangering them, and Latvia has indicated it will not invoke NATO’s Article 4 consultation mechanism over the incursions.
Rather than weakening alliances, the situation appears to be strengthening ties between Ukraine and its allies.
In a post on X addressed to his Baltic counterparts, Wadephul stated Germany’s solidarity with the Baltic allies, emphasizing, “A threat against one ally is a threat against the whole Alliance. We won’t be intimidated. We stand together.”
