The Russian cargo ship Ursa Major, which was reported to be transporting military personnel and equipment from Russian bases in Syria, sank in the Mediterranean Sea near the Spanish coastline on Monday night.
According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, “In the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Russian dry cargo ship Ursa Major … sank following an explosion in the engine room.” The announcement was made Tuesday morning via the ministry’s Telegram channel.
The ship had 16 crew members, all Russian nationals. “Fourteen people were rescued and taken by the rescue services to the port of Cartagena, Murcia. Two crew members remain missing,” the ministry stated.
