Moscow (Eurotoday) – Russia’s deputy foreign minister has confirmed that preparations are underway for a face-to-face dialogue between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking to Russian state media, Sergei Ryabkov indicated that a potential meeting between Putin and Trump could cover a wide range of global issues, extending beyond just the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The question is about starting to move towards normalizing relations between our countries, finding ways to resolve the most acute and potentially very, very dangerous situations, of which there are many, Ukraine among them,
he stated.
However, he emphasized that efforts to arrange such a blank”>meeting are still in the early stages and that making it happen will require “the most intensive preparatory work.”
Ryabkov also mentioned that U.S. and Russian diplomats could convene “within the next two weeks” to lay the groundwork for further discussions between senior officials.
What agreements were made at the recent Saudi Arabia session?
Recently, Russian and U.S. representatives agreed to begin working toward ending the conflict in Ukraine and strengthening their diplomatic and economic relations. This decision was reached at a high-level gathering in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy under President Trump.
Following the session, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that both sides had broadly agreed on three key objectives: restoring staffing levels at their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow, creating a high-level team to support Ukraine peace talks, and exploring closer diplomatic and economic cooperation.
Rubio clarified, however, that these talks—attended by his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, along with other senior Russian and U.S. officials—were just the beginning of a broader dialogue, and that much more work needed to be done. Lavrov described the meeting as “very useful.” Notably, no Ukrainian officials were present at the session.
