The Kremlin on Sunday welcomed the shift in U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump, stating that Washington’s current approach “largely coincides” with Russia’s geopolitical stance.
In recent weeks, Trump has drastically altered U.S. policy on Ukraine, adopting a more conciliatory tone toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has also echoed Moscow’s rhetoric and accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of obstructing efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict, which began with Putin’s unprovoked invasion. This marks a stark contrast to former U.S. President Joe Biden, who actively supported Kyiv in its fight against Russian forces.
“The new U.S.] administration is rapidly reshaping foreign policy. This largely aligns with our perspective,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Sunday in a [video posted on Telegram.
His remarks come amid efforts by European leaders to repair growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington, following a heated exchange between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday.
Peskov also praised the U.S. decision to support a United Nations draft resolution that avoids labeling Russia as the aggressor in the Ukraine war, calling it a shift that would have previously been “impossible to imagine.”
