Moscow (Eurotoday) – Russian officials and lawmakers have condemned French President Emmanuel Macron for claiming that Russia poses a threat to Europe, warning that such statements could push the West towards the brink of a new world war.
Amid the ongoing conflict, the expansion of Russian forces in Ukraine in 2024 and U.S. President Donald Trump’s shift in U.S. policy towards Ukraine and Russia—calling for a settlement to end the war—have raised concerns among European leaders that the U.S. may be distancing itself from European security matters.
Just a day earlier, in an address to the nation, Macron declared that Russia was
“a threat for France and Europe.”
He asserted that the war in Ukraine had turned into a “global conflict” and suggested opening discussions about extending France’s nuclear deterrent to its European partners.
In response, senior Russian senator Konstantin Kosachev remarked,
“Such an erroneous analysis leads to fatal errors.”
He further argued that Macron had misjudged Russia’s reaction to the expansion of the U.S.-led military alliance.
“Macron maniacally imposes on his citizens, allies, and the entire world a completely false concept of what is happening—‘the Russians are coming!’ Such false conclusions and false suggestions lead to disaster.”
Meanwhile, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova likened Macron to “Ole Lukøje,” a mythical character from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales who tells bedtime stories to children.
“Every day he makes some completely out-of-touch statements that contradict his previous remarks. He’s a storyteller,”
Zakharova was quoted as saying by the state news agency RIA.
Additionally, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev dismissed Macron’s warnings, mockingly referring to him as “Micron” and asserting that he posed no threat at all.
How does Putin dismiss NATO’s concerns about Russian expansion?
Similarly, Russian officials argue that the heightened rhetoric from Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other European leaders in recent days is not backed by concrete military strength, instead reflecting Russia’s battlefield advantages in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously ordered the expansion of Russia’s regular army by 180,000 troops, bringing the total number of active servicemen to 1.5 million. Putin has repeatedly dismissed Western claims that Russia could potentially attack a NATO country, stating such concerns are baseless. Under NATO’s charter, an attack on one member would constitute an attack on all 32 alliance members.
Putin frames the conflict as part of a broader historical struggle against the West, arguing that after the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, Western nations sought to weaken Russia by expanding NATO and encroaching on what he considers Moscow’s sphere of influence, including Ukraine.

Seems like Macron’s trying out for a role in a new fairy tale—too bad he’s missing the part where the brave knight actually has a sword. 🏰 Meanwhile, Russia’s like, “Who’s threatening who here? We’re just trying to enjoy our vodka in peace!” 🍸

Seems our dear Macron’s got a flair for fantasy—next he’ll be casting spells to ward off “the Russians,” as if this were some medieval tale. 🤷♂️ Maybe he should stick to fairy tales and leave the geopolitics to the grown-ups, eh? 🥴
