Moscow authorities announced on Saturday that they had thwarted an assassination attempt targeting a senior Russian military officer and a pro-war blogger. The plot, which allegedly involved a homemade bomb hidden in a portable music speaker, was reportedly orchestrated by Ukraine.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB, revealed that a Russian citizen currently in custody had allegedly acted under the instructions of a Ukrainian intelligence officer associated with Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR). The officer, who identified himself as “Andrey” via the Telegram messaging platform, reportedly directed the suspect to retrieve a bomb disguised as a portable speaker from a concealed location in Moscow. According to the FSB, the device contained approximately 1.5 kilograms of TNT.
While the FSB did not disclose specific details about the intended targets, the announcement comes just 10 days after Ukraine reportedly assassinated the commander of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical forces in Moscow. In a separate incident back in October, Ukraine claimed responsibility for a car bombing that killed Andriy Korotkyy, a security official at the Russia-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. At the time, GUR labeled Korotkyy a “war criminal.”
Despite allegations linking Ukraine to this latest assassination attempt, Kyiv has not taken responsibility for the plot.
