The coalition of four parties, along with ethnic minority representatives, is set to secure a parliamentary majority, paving the way for a prime minister to be chosen from their ranks.
Discussions are ongoing regarding the coalition’s governance agenda and the choice of prime minister. Current Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, from the Social Democratic Party, may retain his position.
In last Sunday’s parliamentary election, the coalition successfully prevented a decisive victory for far-right parties. However, the growing influence of the far-right, which now unites three ultranationalist groups in parliament, indicates that far-right leader Călin Georgescu might still emerge victorious in the presidential runoff this Sunday.
The far-right surge contrasts with the reformist platform of Elena Lasconi, a candidate from the USR party, who would become Romania’s first female president if elected. Lasconi has pledged to maintain Romania’s alignment with the EU and NATO, while warning that a Georgescu presidency could steer the nation back toward Russian influence and authoritarian rule.
Current polling by the Romanian agency CURS suggests Georgescu is projected to win 57.8% of the vote against Lasconi. Meanwhile, the pro-EU coalition has urged voters to choose a European future in Sunday’s runoff election, emphasizing the importance of maintaining democratic values and Western alliances.
