Roeselare Transforms Former Gray Lot into Moermanpark Featuring 130 Trees

Roeselare (Eurotoday) – Moermanpark in Roeselare, once a vast asphalt parking area, has been transformed into a green urban space with 130 trees, natural water channels, and a playground. Alderman Nathalie Muylle points to the park as a model for climate resilience and improved quality of life.

As reported by VRT News, Roeselare now boasts a newly established Moermanpark, created on a site that formerly served as a large concrete parking lot. In its place now stands a vibrant green space prioritizing ecology, sustainability, and public health.

Nathalie Muylle (CD&V), Alderman for Urban Development, described the conversion as revealing hidden value. “Grass now grows where there used to be concrete,” she said, highlighting how rainwater is now visibly guided through floral landscapes and pedestrian paths. The park showcases 130 freshly planted trees, bright flower beds, and tranquil trails for walking.

Moermanpark also includes a playground designed for families and open wadis—shallow, plant-filled channels that capture and purify rainwater. These features illustrate the city’s efforts toward climate adaptation and sustainable water management.

How did Roeselare transform a parking lot into a sustainable park?

Officials describe Moermanpark as a much-needed green haven within the city. According to the mayor, urban areas are becoming hotter during summer months, making spaces like Moermanpark essential. The trees and vegetation offer significant shade and contribute to cooling the surrounding environment.

The park is tailored to meet the needs of a diverse community—children can enjoy the playground, older residents have ample seating areas, and students and professionals can find quiet spots to relax or study. There are also well-lit paths that allow for evening visits and recreational activities, including jogging and walking.

Oh joy, just what the world needed—another park to sit in while contemplating the existential dread of modern life. 🌳 Because nothing says “climate resilience” quite like 130 trees planted in a place where people once parked their cars, right? 😏
