On Saturday, the European Commission declared Russia the aggressor in the ongoing conflict, stating that it will evaluate the outcome of the announced Easter truce only when it is assured that hostilities have genuinely ceased.
The Commission underscored in its statement that Russia has the capacity to end the war at any time if it genuinely chooses to do so.
“Given Russia’s history of aggression, we must first verify that its hostile actions have completely stopped and that concrete steps have been taken towards a sustainable ceasefire,” it stated. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the ceasefire order had been communicated to all military commanders engaged in the conflict in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the Easter truce would take effect at 6 PM (5 PM in Poland) and would remain in place for humanitarian purposes until midnight (11 PM in Poland) from Sunday night to Monday.
However, Andriy Kovalенко, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, has reported that Russian forces are still launching attacks on Ukrainian positions, despite the truce declaration. (04.19.2025)
