Anitta Hipper, the spokesperson for the European Commission, responded on Wednesday to allegations made by former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko about the potential misuse of martial law by the Kyiv authorities. She emphasized that the decision to sustain this state of emergency rests with the Ukrainian government, grounded in the country’s constitutional framework.
“Our stance on martial law is clear, particularly given the specific and tragic circumstances we are experiencing. Ultimately, it is Ukraine that makes this determination, as per its constitutional system,” Hipper highlighted.
On the same day, the Ukrainian Parliament voted to extend martial law until August 6, in light of Russia’s ongoing large-scale aggression against Ukraine. A significant majority of parliament members in the Verkhovna Rada, numbering 357, backed the extension, which enables the government to continue mobilizing troops and halts the electoral process.
Petro Poroshenko, who leads the largest opposition party, criticized the current administration, asserting that the martial law is being misused. He stated, “Martial law is not only being applied for national defense but is also being exploited to establish an authoritarian regime. The concentration of power cannot be the aim today. The president’s unchecked authority over the parliament is degrading for all of Ukraine,” Poroshenko asserted. (18.04.20205)
