Pope Francis, who had part of his lung removed in his youth, was hospitalized earlier this month at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to a respiratory infection, preventing him from making public appearances.
According to the Vatican, blood tests conducted on Saturday revealed thrombocytopenia (a condition characterized by a low platelet count) linked to anemia, necessitating blood transfusions.
Despite remaining alert, his prognosis remains uncertain, the Vatican stated.
Earlier on Saturday, the Vatican also announced that Pope Francis, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, will not appear in public on Sunday for prayer with pilgrims. This marks the second consecutive week he has missed the event.
