“We need to thoroughly assess all legal frameworks, including those related to the Green Deal. It’s essential to pinpoint the issues and have the resolve to amend regulations that could be driving energy prices excessively high,” Tusk urged.
The Polish Prime Minister has called for serious consideration of the swift introduction of an emissions trading system for the transport and building sectors (ETS2). “I must caution against this move,” Tusk stated. “Implementing it could result in significant political repercussions if energy costs continue to rise.”
ETS2 is a component of the Green Deal, an ambitious initiative launched by the European Union aimed at achieving climate neutrality across the continent by 2050.
While Tusk emphasized the importance of environmental protection and climate action, he warned that Europe risks losing its global competitive edge if energy prices remain three times higher than those in the US or China. “If Europe were to face economic collapse, who would then safeguard the environment?”
