Warsaw ** The Hungarian ambassador was notably absent from the gala event marking the commencement of Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. This exclusion follows Budapest’s controversial decision to grant political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, a former Polish Deputy Minister of Justice, who is wanted for several alleged offenses.
Last December, Hungary provided asylum to Romanowski, citing “concrete evidence of deficiencies in the judicial process” against him as justification for their decision.
Poland deemed this action a “hostile act.” Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish Foreign Minister, conveyed a formal message to the Hungarian ambassador indicating that he would “not be welcomed” at the gala held at Warsaw’s National Theatre, as stated by Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, Deputy Minister for European Affairs, during a public television broadcast.
Romanowski, who served from 2019 to 2023 overseeing a fund aimed at assisting victims of crime, is under suspicion for allegedly embezzling or attempting to embezzle nearly 40 million euros. (January 3, 2025)
