Brussels, July 27 Eurotoday Newspaper — Russian elite sanctions are facing another legal challenge after Tatiana Navka, wife of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, asked the European Union’s General Court to remove sanctions imposed on her following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She is also seeking more than €2 million in damages, arguing that the EU lacked sufficient legal grounds for the restrictions.
EU Court Reviews Sanctions Challenge
Navka, an Olympic gold medal-winning ice dancer, was sanctioned by the European Union in 2022 as part of measures targeting individuals linked to senior Russian officials. Court filings state that she believes the Council of the European Union made legal and factual errors when placing her on the sanctions list.
The sanctions include an asset freeze and a travel ban across EU member states. The legal challenge is one of several filed by relatives of high-ranking Russian officials seeking to overturn restrictive measures.
Russian Elite Sanctions Remain Under Scrutiny
The European Union has imposed multiple sanctions packages since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. These measures target political leaders, business figures, military officials and people considered closely connected to the Kremlin.
Legal experts say the court will examine whether the EU provided sufficient evidence to justify keeping Navka on the sanctions list while respecting European legal standards.
