Brussels – Commissioner Jessika Roswall revealed she tested positive for six of the 13 analyzed PFAS, including three deemed harmful to reproductive health, with some levels exceeding the recommended thresholds, according to her team.
“I am not an exception (…) the results indicate that I have PFAS in my blood, specifically toxic substances related to reproductive health,” the commissioner stated during a press conference focused on the state of nature in Europe.
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of synthetic chemicals that are notoriously resistant to breakdown.
These substances are utilized in a variety of products (such as textiles, food packaging, kitchenware, and cosmetics) due to their non-stick, water-repellent, and heat-resistant qualities. However, they can pose significant health risks, including elevated cholesterol levels, cancer, and adverse effects on fertility and fetal development.
The European Union aims to propose a ban on PFAS in common consumer products by 2026. (September 29, 2025)
