“We are ready to ask the Commission to withdraw its current proposal and develop a new one that better reflects our concerns,” the Socialists and Democrats stated to POLITICO.
“We have decided on our course of action regarding this proposal,” the statement added.
Both major parties want von der Leyen to abandon the plan that combines agricultural funds and regional payments—over half of the budget—into a single cash pool managed by national governments.
They argue this move is a guise to reduce funding for farmers, key supporters of the EPP, although the Commission disagrees with this perspective.
It is especially troubling for von der Leyen that her own EPP party is advocating to discard the proposal—a stance confirmed by three lawmakers and an aide associated with the budget issue.
“The budget proposal poses a significant problem regarding the internal market, as we believe it would cause fragmentation within the EU’s agricultural market,” EPP spokesperson Daniel Köster informed reporters on Friday.
